The Make-Up Issue We've spent a lot of 2011 talking clothes and hair, but not dedicated all that much of it to the other art of perfection: make-up. All that changes this October as we dedicate the month to taking you through make-up trends for the current season and next year. For those who haven't been keeping up with the features by checking out Fashionising.com daily, never fear: we've got all the currently published make-up features for you further down in this newsletter. McQueen's dominatrix meets Snow White Blaming the Royal Wedding for an enforced reference to Kate Middleton every time Sarah Burton is spoken of seems very legitimate. A historic wedding dress that reassured the longevity of the lace trend, Burton has put an additional bookmark in the house of McQueen. When Alexander McQueen's autumn / fall 2011 collection strutted down the runway at Paris fashion week, early this year, traces of princess elegance collided with McQueen's trademark buoyant-robotic aesthetic. The look book for the season is now out and the fashion house's bequest continues to awe us. Knitted fur, fringed tweed jackets, copious amount of leather accentuate the fetish-aspect of the collection, while cascading organza blurs the lines of androgyny. Raven black and snowy white hijack the entire look book embracing each piece with the McQueen gene. The theme was angled towards the former though, thanks to those models with femme fatale blood running through their veins, there was always going to be a strong contingent of the latter. So what else could be expected of Karlie Kloss' arched brows and skyscraper legs? And while we don't necessarily think it's time for her to lose that innate sense of classic glamour all together, there's no faulting the confidence with which she pulls off this revealing cut-away dress. Revealing it may be, but it still fits within the bounds of that character she plays so well: the classic beauty updated for the modern day. No fancy hairstyles, no smoky eyes needed. As Kloss shows, keeping a fresh face is the perfect way to balance a dress such as this one. If you didn't guess from the boldness of the outfits, the clothes are all from Tom Ford's womenswear line. I can't say I'm the biggest fan of all of the blinged-up manifestations of extreme glamour - the truth is, Ford's pieces can be played down to a more elegant level. But there are two saving graces here: Anthony Unwin's styling seems to do over-the-top glamour with a sense of knowing self awareness. It's go big, or go home. The second, of course, is Chanel. But eyeball-dropping is really ensued when you wear lingerie as outerwear and take that to the streets. A visual treat for Paris was on the cards when Daisy Lowe braved its streets in this Jean Paul Gaultier bustier and skirt teamed with rocketing cherry-soled spiked heels. What's not to love about this ensemble? The conical breast padding, the vertical fabrication from waist down and panelling on the outwards of the body, every detailing hits the accents of the body that need most accentuation. It consisted of a monochromatic pallette with flashes of colour such as hot pink and turquoise. It also combined textures such as matte vs shiny created with the use of reflective perspex; while the prints seen throughout the collection were bold and geometric. To compliment this, the hair followed the futuristic tribal feel with a new spin on the ponytail. It stemmed from 8 diamond sections that all linked together with geometry and precision. I caught up with GHD Creative Director, Kenna, backstage who created this striking look. To find out how to recreate it yourself, check out the instructions and how-to video after the break. To the melodic tunes of violin, draped in a full-length black Givenchy gown, kitten heels and noticeable pearls, a lady steps out of the cab. Her vulnerable shoulders argue with the dark armoured sunglasses, but her perfected topknot signifies her status. High status, of course. Holding a croissant and coffee, she glides to the shop window and, just like that, has Breakfast at Tiffany's. One of the most memorable opening scenes in the history of cinema, this Hollywood classic still lies fresh in our minds. And that is something of a feat given that today marks 50 years since Breakfast at Tiffany's first lit up the silver screen. One of the original cinematic romantic comedies, it was also a cinematic outing that changed the way women looked at fashion, accessories and, most importantly, their jewellery.
