Flying Greener Skies: Virgin America Named Most Eco-Friendly Airline

Virgin America passengers can use the touch-screen RED entertainment system to buy carbon offsets.

We’re always looking for ways to green our daily routine, from toting reusable bags to the grocery store to reading digital newspapers and books. Yet, when flying across the country, what choices are there to help reduce our carbon footprint? SmarterTravel, an online resource that reports travel news and lists deals and tips for its users, announced its Editors’ Choice Awards and named Virgin America as this year’s Most Eco-Friendly Airline.

The first airline to list its carbon footprint, according to standards from The Climate Registry, Virgin America launched with environmentally friendly practices and policies. Since its debut in 2007, the airline has operated a fleet up to 25 percent more fuel-efficient than the average fleet flying within the United States. Virgin America also practices single-engine taxiing, maximizes use of efficient ground power, uses advanced avionics to fly more efficiently and employs the practice of cost-index flying — regulating cruising speeds to reduce fuel burn. The airline also recycles in-flight waste from about 47 percent of its flights. Passengers can use the touch-screen RED seatback entertainment to purchase carbon offsets for their flights from Carbonfund.org. (The carbon offset of a 6,000-mile or less flight, for example, is $11.33.)

In addition to these efforts, Virgin America’s California headquarters recently completed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification process, an international certification system to recognize eco-friendly buildings and communities. The airline also will be one of two anchor tenants in San Francisco International Airport’s Terminal 2 facility, designed to improve indoor air quality and reduce energy consumption. After the terminal opens in 2011, it is expected to have Silver LEED Certification. Terminal 2 will offer preferential parking for hybrid cars and is the first airport dining program in the country to recruit Slow Food vendors.

Virgin America has flights available in many of the United States’ major cities, including Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Seattle, Toronto, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The airline plans to announce service to three additional destinations later this year.

JetBlue, Continental and Delta also have implemented green initiatives over the past few years. For more on airlines’ technological advances, including which carriers feature in-flight Wi-Fi, check out “Fly the Tech-Friendly Skies” in the July/August issue of VIVmag. And tell us: What services are most important to you when it comes to choosing an airline?

The chic learn to click (Economist)

“Luxury firms may at last be waking up to the internet, but they have a long way to catch up… It is odd that an industry that would not be seen dead in last season’s colour is wedded to the last century’s technology.”

India’s luxury market remains underdeveloped (CPP Luxury)

“The lack of upscale retail space, high taxes and red tape are the main factors which have been hampering the development of the Indian luxury market. Luxury spending in India… was less than a tenth of that in China last year.”

Harvey Nichols profits up (Retail Week)

“Harvey Nichols… has revealed that the luxury department store will return to record pre-recession profit levels in its current financial year but has warned of a drop in shopper spend in 2011.”

Aquascutum fights to turn things around (Independent)

“The fashion brand Aquascutum is working with a debt advisory firm to raise capital to drive its turnaround, following its acquisition by the owner of Jaeger last September.”

Grow Your Own McQueen Garden With the New Visionaire (QS)

“The nicest touch: it turns into flowers. The issue will include images inspired by McQueen, printed on paper embedded with wildflower seeds. When you plant the pages, water and sun them, they’ll eventually blossom.”

Life Ball: A Night Filled With Stars And Euphoria

Bill Clinton, Diane von Furstenberg, Dita von Tesse, Misshapes' Leigh Lezark, Richie Rich, Rebecca Romijn, Jerry O'Connell, and Lydia Hearst were among the New York society fixtures who flew out to Austria for the Life Ball, an AIDS awareness and prevention event.

The Austrian Parliament opened it's doors for the charity event, the Life Ball, which donated 100,000 Euro to the Clinton Foundation. With 300 guests, the Parliament house as the party ground, and the Vienna Philharmonic as the musical act, the event was a guaranteed night to remember.A thunderstorm and bout of heavy rain intruded but did not stop the event from continuing. As swiss model Xenia Tchoumitcheva explained, "The energy here is euphoric" and it is clearly evident through the outfits and costumes the guests wore…

or didn't wear.

Happy 5th Birthday Refinery29

Go HERE for more photos by Stephanie Ketty, and tag yourself and your friends!

Last night, the cool kids at Refinery29 held a party in celebration of their fifth birthday  in collaboration with Madewell at Broadway East. The small, super-understated lounge was packed with a stylish set, from precocious young bloggers to impeccably dressed and accessorized fashion girls.

Guests lounged on the cozy scarlet-upholstered banquettes and danced to beats spun by DJ scenesters Becka Diamond and Chelsea Leyland. The subtle brick interior was jazzed up with some seriously glitzy party decorations by Confetti System. Redken also provided complimentary styling and quick consultations.

Now a go-to resource for all things fashion, from street style to NYC sample sales, Refinery29's sure grown up a lot since its birth in 2005. Over the years, we've watched it mature into a fully-fledged internet fashion powerhouse, and truly, we don't know we got our fashion fix pre-Refinery29.

"Best 2K I Ever Spent!" Gallery Bar Presents Scenes From Lindsay Lohan's Life

Judging from the costumes and party decorations, it looks like someone threw a "Linz Is Off To The Chokey" party at Gallery Bar. What better way to send the troubled Lohan off to her next great adventure than to relive her highs and lows . . .

Uh oh, looks like Mean Girls.

The twins in The Parent Trap practice their intimidation tactics!

She's twirling so fast it's like Herbie: Fully Loaded.

Personally, we like poorly acted movies about lovebugs, but some of the critics just pointed and laughed. Or pointed and glowered.

Damn, everything was better when the girl still had red hair.

Methinks he just saw I Know Who Killed Me.

A little girl-on-girl action never hurts . . .

Freaky Friday. Except she's switched places with a mustachio'd gentleman instead of with Jamie Lee Curtis.

I think we all know which phase Linzers is going through here.

This is the face the judge made last week.

Good luck in jail, LiLo! Just remember: Martha Stewart was in for way longer, and she's doing gangbusters now!
