EFW Weekly May 23, 2010
The sun is shining and we can enjoy a long weekend! Time to check what's new in eco fashion and to make plans for this week. If you're in Vancouver, be sure to celebrate next Saturday May 29 with Adhesif designer Melissa Ferreira who is opening her very first store on Main Street. Congratulations Melissa!

DREAMS COME TRUE
Lots of events this week to catch up on industry insights, indulge in catwalk shows, meet new people or simply celebrate with designers who are realizing the long cherished dream of opening their own flagship store. Enjoy!

ADDICTIVE ADHESIF
Sitting down with Adhesif founder Melissa Ferreira means getting insights in the whole eco fashion and recycling movement. She is a designer, entrepreneur and stylist, but also a strong thinker and activist. And this makes our conversation go way beyond the aesthetics of her designs.

PROM GLOW
I have it on good authority (straight from an 18-year old, that is) that mid-May is the time for high school gals to start bronzing their shoulders in preparation for the strapless gowns they’ll don come prom night. Throughout the ages the long, strapless gown has stood the test of time with classic silhouettes gaining embellishments in tune to the color, fabric or feel of seasonal trends. As the prom dress has evolved, so too has the clothing industry in which it is crafted, offering today’s teens plenty of options to go green on prom night. And with teenagers spending up to $1000 for the night, the opportunity to ensure that this investment supports ethical production should not be missed.

SPRING FAVOURITES
While the weather in Europe keeps teasing us with fall temperatures, we love to brighten up your spring with some of these newcomers in the eco fashion sphere!
uth Ferguson is the founder of a new lifestyle brand inspired by the bohemian and sexy vibes of Rio de Janeiro. Named after her grandmother Olga, Olga Olsson starts of with a line of sexy beachwear for men and women that definitely makes us long for hot days.

TURN THE WORLD AROUND
By the end of 2011 all major textile brands and retailers will have announced initiatives that involve working with a more sustainable supply chain. By then, textile brands will have made supplier choices based on which suppliers are able to report and demonstrate sustainability measures. Between 2012 and 2015, the movement beyond early adopters and into the mainstream will happen. These are just some of the predictions in the 'March to Sustainability' report, published by cKinetics. The report maps supply chain sustainability initiatives by global brands and retailers in their textile procurement process. Most of the firms are already implementing measures within their own facilities and it is a matter of months before they look to their supply chain which is where the majority of the environmental footprint exists.

TAND THE WINNER IS...
Congratulations to Nicole Bridger who just won the Fashion Takes Action (FTA) Design Forward Award! We interviewed Nicole last month and loved her designs and strong down-to-earth business approach. FTA said that Nicole Bridger has thought about the "extras" when it comes to buttons, labels and hangtag alternatives. This strengthens her commitment to sustainable design as there is a bigger picture mentality going on.

Look of the Day: Reese Witherspoon

1. On the Road

I have read this and sadly, I do not remember where I put my copy. I plan to read it again before the movie with Kristen Stewart in it comes out.

2. Happiness At Work

Based on the review that Dani gave, this book is one treasure that most members of the corporate world will truly enjoy. I will be sure to check this out when it hits the stores.

3. Water for Elephants

I have not read this but the plot seems to be interesting. Again, I must get a copy before the film version (with Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon) comes out.

4. Twilight and History

In case you want to get your hands on all literature that are somehow connected to Robert Pattinson, this one should be on your list as well.

5. Elixer

Written by Hillary Duff. It amazes me how incredibly enterprising this girl is. She might just own the whole Hollywood  one of these days.

I know what  you’re thinking. Why shouldn't you have sex? Yes, of course, you are young; but according to your own estimation as a teenager, you are old enough. You aren't married, but in your very own opinion, that does not matter – so why should anyone else's opinion matter? If you want to have sex, then what's to stop you? Why should you refrain, wait, and abstain? In short, why should you not do something that in your own mind you believe is good? My last post on this topic stirred up a lot of people. Is that what I'm trying to do again? No, not really, I'm just posting this because some teenagers out there want and need different opinions. Take note, I am not strictly saying NOT to have sex before marriage. This is basically for ages 13-16.

7. Since before we were born, people have been suffering from dangerous diseases.

The term today is STD – sexually transmitted disease. It only takes having sex one time with an infected partner to get infected yourself and having sex with more than one partner will increase those risks. Using a condom will reduce the chances, but, like Russian Roulette, you still have a bullet in that chamber and eventually you could get it. Do you trust that your partner isn't having sex with someone else? Marriage certainly is not a perfect protection against a disease, but it is a lot safer than having sex with no other strings attached.

Whether you're heading back to school after a two-week vacation, or after the long summer break, you're sure to want a little something to help you get back in the mood for learning. A cute new guy in one of your classes will help, but that's not always possible, so here's my list of the ten best back-to-school supplies, just in case…

1. It Takes Two Laptop Bag

Price: $54.99 at modcloth.com
Enjoy the flora and fauna as this laptop bag keeps your computer safe as can be. I love the graphic design, with the curlicues and such on the animals and trees… the palette is soft, organic naturals in tame greens and olive drabs, perfect for camouflaging this handy, cushy laptop bag. It's PVC-coated to be waterproof, and measures 10" tall by 14" wide by 1.5" deep.

2. Paperchase Candy Cupcakes Ball Pen, Candy Cupcakes Design

Price: £2.00 at amazon.co.uk
If you have to use an ink pen, why not make it achingly sweet and cute as can be? This pretty-in-pink pen is just the thing for jotting notes, making dates in your planner or even scribbling a quick love letter. I wonder if there's a matching notebook or pencil case? So sweet!

3. Smiling Sweets Notepad

Price: $4.00 at shanalogic.com
Ah-ha! This ought to match that pen just fine! Stash this in your school bag or in your locker, or keep it on your desk for doodling or, perhaps better, taking notes or perhaps that cute guy’s phone number! It measures 4" by 5.5 inches and contains 25 pages. I love the super-adorable, yummy-looking treats along the edges…

Whatever name you call it, pop, fountain drink, soda, Coke, it is just one thing, bad for you! As Americans we drink this stuff by the gallons, more than any other country in the world. Soda is just ounces of empty calories that can cause all sorts of health issues and be as addictive as smoking.

Here are 5 reasons that you should stop drinking soda:

1. It Makes You Fat!

A study done at the University of Texas discovered that soda increases a person's risk of being overweight by 32.8 percent and drinking diet soda increased that risk by 54.5 percent! So "diet" isn't always better for you.

2. Empty Calories

Most 20 ounce sodas contain 250 calories but don't offer any other nutrients or minerals. The two main ingredients are sugar and caffeine.

3. Addiction

Soda contains caffeine, which is a stimulant, and if you stop drinking caffeine suddenly it can cause a myriad of withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, depression, irritability and tremors.

4. Risk of Heart Disease and Diabetes

The American Heart Association’s journal "Circulation" published a study in 2007 that people who drank soda every day were 44 percent more at risk to develop Metabolic Syndrome – a condition that increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

5. Bad for the Environment

Soda bottles and cans make up a huge amount of un-recyclable debris in our countries’ landfills, which is ultimately bad for everyone’s health.
So the next time you reach for that soda, pop or Coke, remember these facts and grab some water instead.
How do you think soda manufactures can be more health oriented and environmentally responsible?
