Once upon a long lost time, back when Prohibition reigned and bootleggers were kings, New York City was chock full of speakeasies – those secret bars where coded knocks and whispered passwords could gain one entrance to a swirling world of illicit thrills. Indeed, it was during this era that most of the cocktails we know today were first concocted, to disguise the rawness of bathtub gin and enhance the allure of brass-blaring jazz. So where did it all go? Well, the flappers and the gangsters may have gone the way of the Charleston, but the glory of that age can still be found in the great heritage bars of New York.
