LATEST NEWS - RAD HOURANI

1)  Why is it important for the entire collection to be unisex and seasonless? Do you think that could be the future of fashion?

I never do anything thinking about fashion or the future or one specifec catogery, i'm intreseted in a whole world, i'm into a complete life style that i live in today. I think that as a society, we've been extremely programmed. Even the most advanced societies are very limited in the way they define themselves. The way I do things without gender or season, it applies to everything in life. It's about defying those limitations that are so often self imposed. I believe that the obsession with segregation or religion is what breeds war.  I think that people should use their own brains to understand things and what is good or bad and what they like or don't like, rather than allow it to be externally decided. And i don't know if i need to call my self a designer,  I like a certain aesthetic that reflects myself and the way i see the world.

2) Many of your pieces have a multifunctional element, why is this an important detail for your collection?

For Rad Hourani collection #6, i designed 6 garments ( 3 jackets, 1 dress/top, 1 pants, 1 bag ) that you can transform and style into 22 looks. The Rad Hourani line functions as a laboratory of a life style in which design, photography, film and music can be found. I wanted to focus on transformable designs that i already started in the past three collections with an experiments with new shapes and fabrics in a couture-like approach. The RAD by Rad Hourani collection, focuses on styles and silhouettes of the same unisex signature look offered in different materials and a more casual transformable fit. My objective is to create garments that can be worn by anyone at any time, i also subverts the biannual fashion calendar to some extent by fusing and blending seasonal stereotypes into an adaptable innovation system based on aseasonal collections identified only by their sequential number.

3) Tell us how you feel about Individualism. (the theme for this issue is Individualism, so we're curious to hear your take on it)

I believe that there is a base to everything and my base is an illusion, because I am an illusion and you are an illusion, and everything is an illusion based on certain unique experiences. So I am the past and my past is my experience that I keep with me and I try to push forward and evolve with it. My way of thinking is seeing the world with no boarders, no nationality, no age, color, gender or season and "IDIVIDUALISM" is related to each individual and there way of being. I love seeing my cloths mixed into different style or personality, for me, the people who knows how to adopt things ( not just cloths ) into there life are the most brilliant for me.

4) Your collaboration with Aldo shoes features 3 styles including a heeled sandal and boot for both women and men—do you think we will start to see a new male footwear silhouette in seasons to come?

When I'm designing a collection, I don't think to myself that I am designing a collection for men or women, i design from a virgin point of view, trying to elude classical ready-to-wear rules that made us believe that women and men deserve different approaches. I'm inspired by the idea of creating something that can't be defined by a limited category. Things that have no reference from the past. I believe the  only way you can attend to this kind of inspiration, is by observing everything around you. I'm inspired by things that makes me curious about them and makes me react in a new way. And if people react and open there mind more into a genderless way of dressing, that's amazing.

5) You've said that you are your own style icon or muse. What did you wear before you were designing?

I wore black cloths most of the time from different brands,i was trying to create a smilliar look to what i do today, but it was never close as i when i was styling i never found what i was exactly looking for and espacialy for my own wardrobe, that's how the idea of Unisex came to me as it refelects my personality and the way i live today and i'm lucky that i found my own style with a very clear direction.

6) We read that you are 'allergic' to trends— tell us why you value style over fashion trends?

I always do what makes sens to me as fashion for me is about clothes transcending simple functionality and gaining symbolic, evocative power by engaging in a dialogue with their environment and their time. It's a tool for self-expression and self-invention. Therefore i'm not into trends, i'm into style in which i focus on my signature look. I don't need to be the one who makes the boldest statement every season, i'd much rather commit to my personal aesthetics and that of the people who like to wear my clothes. I believe that the way everyone dresses is a reflection of who they are and their personality, so I think that I needed to create that costume in the clothes that I make to start aligning things with my world, but it doesn't stop there with only fashion.

7) Why are zippers such a significant detail for your collection?

I like the idea of transformable and functionnal objects and zippers allows me to do that, as individuality can be expressed with the help of this single transformable garment that you can transform into 15 different ways, a veste, a jacket, a skirt, a packbag, a cape and many other ways in which style can be taken in many different directions- androgynous, sensual, feminine, masculine, etc.

8) After directing and producing the S/S 2011 video, is film an area you would like to continue to pursue?

I think it's all about a world that I'm communicating with and sharing with everyone.  The clothes are only one part of that, they're not all of that. Photography and videography and film have always, equally, been my interests. It's really about my whole world… Photography and video are as necessary as the collections because it's all about the language I feel the like to use when expressing myself and applying my vision, through all of these mediums. So yes, you'll see more and more of my films and photography soon.

9) Do you think self-confidence and sense of style are related?

Of cours. For me, i've always been very determinated and knew what i wanted. I never cared about what others had to say or think about me. I've always been very confident and i kept on observing everything around me without trying to fit in any category. I guess i refelect that in the cloths i design.

10) What drives you to create more and grow as an artist?

Perfection.
