Our Latest Obsession: Lisa Hoffman Fragrance Oils

Madagascar Orchid Fine Fragrance Oils by Lisa Hoffman, shown here in a limited edition set of two, benefit The Rainforest Foundation.

When it comes to finding a fragrance that’s memorable without being overpowering, we’re pretty picky. But we fell in love with Lisa Hoffman Variations Fine Fragrance Oils. Each scent — Madagascar Orchid, Japanese Agarwood, French Clary Sage, Tuscan Fig and Tunisian Neroli — comes in a set of four ($95), with a version for each time of day: morning, daytime, evening and night. And it’s a purchase we can feel good about since 20 percent of sales from the Madagascar Orchid and Japanese Agarwood fragrances benefit The Rainforest Foundation, a nonprofit started by Sting and Trudie Styler — friends of Lisa and her husband, actor Dustin Hoffman — to support the rainforest ecosystems and the indigenous people.

Both oils feature rainforest ingredients — as do all products from Hoffman’s Spa Bath and Shower Collections, which also donate 20 percent of proceeds to the Rainforest Foundation. Aside from the exotic flower for which it is named, Madagascar Orchid has accompanying notes of white sheer jasmine, mimosa mood, ylang dew and pink peony. Our favorite oil, however, is the Japanese Agarwood, which was nominated during the Fragrance of the Year awards as one of the top five of 2009. It contains notes of Italian bergamot, spiced ginger and warm amber. The oils are applied to pulse points for a subtle scent, and Hoffman recommends applying a small amount to your hair.

The fragrance does need to be reapplied after a bit, which makes it easy to sync each version with the appropriate time of day. The morning variant is light and refreshing, while daytime is rich. The evening version is sensual and romantic, and bedtime is gentle and soft. The oils, packed in a glass vial with a roller ball, come in a special wallet that can easily fit in a purse. Hoffman herself is a world traveler, so packing and portability are key for her fragrances. In fact, it was on a trip to Japan that she learned about the traditional Kodo incense ceremony and became interested in unique and exotic scents.

Refill packets of four ($60) are available, but QVC is offering a limited-edition Madagascar Orchid set of two, day and evening ($39.50). The set of two also is available for $43 on the Lisa Hoffman Skincare site, where you’ll also find the limited edition set of Japanese Agarwood.

We love the portable pulse-point oils — especially because each has a fragrance tailored to the hour. Does your fragrance preference change throughout the day?
