What They Wear: Airports

.
Whether they're making their way to tropical destinations or heading off to explore legendary European locations, over the next few months we'll see an increase of jet-setters taking off on summer holiday. And while we can't necessarily replicate the luxurious vacays celebrity nomads enjoy, we can help you emulate all of their necessary travel essentials. After all, between making appearances, filming, and personal vacations, these star passengers spend a good amount of time in and out of airports—which is why it's no surprise they know the what's what in travel wear. After sifting through hundreds of photos, we noticed a few common threads amongst our VIP bunch that we're pleased to detail in today's What They Wear: Airports. So take a tip from these savvy travelers and grab a brimmed hat, cover up with light layers, and pick up your cross-body bag for a fashionable departure!

Brimmed Hats
Chic straw hats are perfect on warm afternoons, but in addition to protecting you from the sun's harsh rays, they're also excellent accessories for covering up any not-so-great hair moments. These camouflage properties are also perfect for long travel days, especially since a chapeau adds a little effortless polish to any look, as our celebrity examples show. The favorite styles for fashionable celebrities are trilbies, fedoras, or Panama hats, so be sure to search for a similar option. The next time you are airport-bound, pick up a style like Emmy Rossum's Express Straw Hat ($35) or J. Crew's Panama Hat ($58) to ensure you will always be looking your best upon arrival.

Of course, the narrow-brimmed woven hat is not the only airport-savvy hat option. Ashley Olsen's generously proportioned summer headwear is a great pool day topper (and perfect vacation hat!) that is both practical and stylish, while Miranda Kerr's conductor cap is another super cute alternative. If a larger, floppy shape à la Olsen is your cup of tea, try Staring at Stars' Short Brim Straw Floppy ($28), but if you are in the mood for a more structured shape like Kerr's, Eugenia Kim's Marina Cap ($154) will fit the bill.

Light Layers
Outside temperatures may be on a continuous rise this summer, but freezing airplane cabins manage to keep us bundled up all flight long. We wouldn't advise a heavy coat during these hot months, but our favorite stars show us how to stay warm while en route by covering up with light layers. You can always finish off your outfit with a scarf or wrap like Miranda Kerr's Ginger & Smart Essentials Travel Wrap ($287), which will keep you warm throughout the day and can easily be removed once you deplane. If you are on the hunt for a more budget-friendly travel necessity, we suggest checking out Talbots' Knotted Paisley Wrap ($69).

We also saw a preponderance of thin sweaters and jackets passing through the terminals this season. Whether it's a button-up in the style of Scarlett Johansson or a pullover per Ashley Olsen, Rachel Bilson, and Emmy Rossum, these lightweight layers will be comfortable and snug for all of your getaways this summer. Head over to the Gap for a sweet sweater option like the Boyfriend Pullover ($27) or check out Central Park West's Lyon Stripe Sweater ($108); they are both sure to keep you cozy. For those chillier early morning and red-eye flights, layer on your favorite boyfriend blazer like Diane Kruger and Rachel Bilson. This closet staple, like Theory's Yelina Blazer ($415), will polish up your casual travel wear, while giving you that extra bit of warmth you are looking for.

Cross-Body and Long-Strap Bags
Traveling comes with a lot of baggage (how else are you supposed to fit all of your vacation essentials?), so we are never shocked when we end up lugging around a few too many suitcases. But when it comes to transporting your everyday necessities—phone, wallet, and lip-gloss—our jet setters have a fondness for the cross-body and long-strap shoulder bags. Nothing screams functional more than the cross-body style: it leaves you hands free, which is perfect for all your multi-tasking needs. Rossum had the right idea when she wore her Chanel version, while Joshua Jackson's man-bag allowed him to hold hands with girlfriend, Diane Kruger. Check out the Paradox Chain Link Cross-Body Bag ($98) for a practical option of your own.

If you prefer easy-on-and-off access, take note of Ashley Olsen and Scarlett Johansson's long-strap bags (a raffia and leather Balenciaga and a Mulberry Hayden Messenger Bag ($595), respectively) and then check out the ASOS Tab Detail Satchel ($42). Much like their picks, it will allow you quick access to all your essentials and give you the same great qualities of the cross-body. Of course, some of our celebs opted for hefty weekenders to store all their travel goods. If you are interested in an oversized shoulder bag, like Bilson's Louis Vuitton Monogram Antheia Hobo GM ($2,970), Tylie Malibu's Nomad Studded Satchel ($478) is a fashionable carry-on that will get you to your destination in style. —Jessica Baker
