Today's Obsessions

Posted: 04 Jun 2010 05:04 AM PDT
Have you ever felt utterly confused by diet advice? When your mum is telling you to drink lots and your friend is warning you of water retention, or your mate recommends a supplement and another says it didn't work at all… what do you do? There is so much advice… what's right, and what should just be ignored? I decided to quiz health professionals, friends and family and find the ten diet tips that really work, so you don't need to look anymore. And here they are…

1. Old Photo

Stick an old photo of yourself at a larger size, or a Photoshopped version if you don't have one, on to the fridge, cupboard and biscuit tin. This will make you think twice about mindless snacking! Put one on your office desk as well so you stick to healthy snacking at work.

2. Eating Out

Just because you’re on a weight loss journey, don't feel that you can't eat out at all, simply ask if the dish can be made using minimal, or no, butter and oil. The restaurant really won't mind, they cook it fresh anyway, and will save on ingredients. It’s a win-win!

3. Pedometer

Keep track of your walking, and motivate yourself to walk more, by using a pedometer. They are small enough to hide in your outfit and make unnoticeable, perfect ways to monitor your exercise. Trust me, this really works!

I like R & B music. Sometimes it is hard to find musicians that can really put a song together, though, and you might be afraid to buy a new album unless you know how good it is! Here are some R & B albums you should own… trust me! I have them all, and I LOVE them!

1. Monica – Still Standing

Monica – Still Standing
Price: $9.99 at bestbuy.com
This newest release by Monica is outstanding. Four years without an album release she came back strong. She shows so much emotion and the strong powerful voice is still here. Monica is indeed Still Standing.

2. Brandy – Never Say Never

Brandy – Never Say Never
Price: $7.99 at bestbuy.com
This is one of Brandy's best works. She has a very unique voice and she chooses the perfect melodies and tunes. My favorite song on this album is "Prince Charming." A perfect song to dedicate to the person you love.

3. Mariah Carey- Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel

Mariah Carey- Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel
Price: $12.99 at bestbuy.com
Mariah Carey has done it again. I understand why all of her albums hit number 1. Mariah has flow, each song is a story and she knows how to manipulate her voice to hit the right notes. Every song on this album is worth listening to.

Some people become celebrities for no discernible reason. They can't act, sing, or do anything demonstrating possession of talent, yet their every move is documented and photographed. Here are some 'celebs' who richly deserve to be included in this list, and if you don't know who any of these people are, be grateful. If they have not graced your shores or media, get down on your knees and thank God (and while you're down there, ask Him why on earth he created them in the first place).

1. Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton
I almost like Paris. She seems sweet but dim. Unfortunately, not content with being filthy rich, Paris continues to try careers for which she is utterly unsuited, such as acting.

2. Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian
She's rich, has a funny foreign name, and is in a reality show. Has sisters named Khloe and Kourtney. This is all that I can discern about this woman. Does not appear to actually do anything, except get her photo constantly in the papers.

3. Jordan/Katie Price

Jordan/Katie Price
This photo encapsulates the tackiness that is 'glamor model' Katie Price. It's like Dr Frankenstein tried to create a drag queen. Fake boobs, fake hair, fake tan, fake lashes … and enough sequins to clothe an entire chorus line. This monstrous creation feeds off publicity and reality shows. Somebody make it stop.

Every wedding has it’s own spin on tradition and what is custom for a bride and groom to incorporate into their big day. There are many cultures that have traditions for respect of family, history, trust, and faith that are beautiful memories to pass down. Here are 7 cultural wedding traditions that can be borrowed from any bride and groom that may want to start a new one.

7. The Lasso of Love…

El Lazo or Lasso is a cultural tradition celebrated during many Hispanic Catholic ceremonies. While the vows are read the lasso is first placed on the groom’s shoulders and then twisted like a figure eight to wrap around the bride’s shoulders. A long strand of rosary beads, a rope of flowers, or a satin cord can be used for the lasso to represent the unity of the new couple and their marriage bond. If you would like to bring this beautiful tradition into your ceremony ask someone in your wedding party or a close member of your family if they would be so honored to place the lasso around you and your groom.

6. Jumping the Broom…

Although there are some critics who say this tradition may not have started in Africa, many Africans and African-Americans enjoy jumping the broom during their wedding ceremony as a cultural tradition. Jumping the broom was a tradition for slaves because they were not allowed to be officially married. As they jumped over the broom together they felt like they were starting a new beginning and sweeping away the past. I think it looks like a fun idea as well as a meaningful one to pass on.

5. Mehndi Rituals…

Mehndi is a ritual in most Indian and Pakistani cultures that is celebrated on the night before the big day. A henna artist or a family member applies the tattoo to the hands and feet of the bride, the bridesmaids can be included in this tradition as well. The tattoo is a design of flowers, patterns, circles, elephants, and peacocks that hides the name of the groom who must search for it to show you how much he loves you! This tradition is a fun way to celebrate at the bride’s home with her bridal party and female relatives with a night full of art, good food, and music. The mehndi represents the beauty of the bride and the love of the new couple. Will you hide your groom’s name with Mehndi?

4. Tea Party…

teaceremony
Chinese Tea Ceremonies are a very important cultural tradition that symbolizes the respect for family and the blending of the two families. Both families, including the groom’s parents and the bride’s parents, get together at either home to have tea. The bride and groom serve the tea starting with the groom’s parents, his grandparents, and uncles and aunts if they are all there. They then serve the tea to the bride’s parents, grandparents, and so on. After the tea the couple gives each parent a lucky red envelope or a lai see, which is usually filled with money or jewelry. Will you share tea with your new family?

3. “Hava Nagila”…

As you can see in this fun celebration the Hora is a tradition where the bride and groom are hoisted on chairs while their guests hold them high and dance to the song, “Hava Nagila” (Let’s Rejoice). Many Jewish bride and grooms include this wild dance in their reception, it is said to be derived from the days when king and queens were carried around the city on throwns. What better day for you and your new husband to feel like royalty! Will you be brave enough to dance the Hora at your wedding?

2. Dollar Dance…

Who doesn’t like money? The question on a lot of wedding sites and blogs is whether the dollar or money dance is too tacky to include during your wedding reception. It is thought to have been created between the 19th and 20th centuries in Poland but has since been a wedding tradition for many cultures. I think it looks like a lot of fun and a good way to get the party started! Do you think guests should line up with their dollars to get the chance to dance with the bride or groom?

1. Crowning the King and Queen…

Greek wedding vows
In many Greek Orthodox weddings the bride and groom have crowns called Stefana placed on their heads that have been blessed and are connected with a white ribbon. The meaning of the crowns is very spiritual as they symbolize the honor and grace that is given to you from the holy spirit as you enter into this new marriage with GOD in your life. This is a great way to feel bonded as a couple together in love and religion.
What cultural traditions will be represented during your wedding ceremony and reception?

Twilight Saga: Eclipse is set to be released in less than a month and I bet many Twi-hards are quite eager to know continuation of Edward and Bella’s love story. I know that a lot of you are more concerned about how Robert will look in the movie and on the red carpet but I thought it will be great to check out the ladies of Twilight as well.

1. Kristen Stewart

1
Well, we all know who she is. She grew up in Hollywood but acting is not the only thing she plans to do. She actually wants to be a writer. Cool, right?

2. Elizabeth Ann Reaser

2

Elizabeth plays Esme. I like her character because she seems to be the voice of reason in the family. Aside from gracing the silver screen, Elizabeth is also a stage actress.

3. Dakota Fanning

3

Dakota plays Jane of the Volturi. She has been acting all her life, it seems. She is the youngest actress to have ever been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award. Methinks her career will truly be enviable and will serve as a standard for many aspiring young actresses out there.

4. Nikki Reed

4
Nikki plays the ever-so-lovely Rosalie. She is only 22 but she has made quite a ripple in Hollywood. She co-wrote the critically acclaimed Thirteen when she was only a teenager. That’s right, she’s a screenwriter, too.

Dates are great, but let's be honest, dates can also get a bit pricey. Even a simple dinner and a movie can add up. Don't worry there are many ways to have a great time and save a buck.

Date Idea #1.

Chances are the city you live in has many great landmarks and attractions that you aren't even aware of. Check your city's website and make a list of cool places to check out. Grab a camera and a date and play tourist in your own town. Price: Nothing, unless you decide to print some of the pictures you get.

Date Idea #2.

If its a spring/summer date that you’re planning, just grab a blanket and a bottle of wine and head to the back yard. Enjoy drinks while you star gaze. Plan ahead by researching constellations and the stories behind to have something to share. Price: Only the cost of the wine.

Date Idea #3.

Why not pick your own strawberries before dipping them in chocolate to share with your love? Not ready for strawberries, try apples. Pickyourown.org has a list of farms all over the US. Many of them offer the options to come out and pick your own fruit and veggies for half the price you would find at your local grocery store. Price: Varies, but should not go over $10

Date Idea #4.

Paint your own pottery is a great way to get creative on a date and break the bank. www.paintyourownpottery.net You go into a shop and pick out a pre-made ceramic piece to paint. When you finish painting you leave the work behind for the shop to fire. Your work of art should be ready in less than a week and just in time for your next date. Price: Most pieces start around $5.

Date Idea #5.

Another cheap great idea is to skip dinner and go straight for the desert. Split something rich and delicious at your favorite restaurant or stop in at the local ice cream shop. Price: Less than $10

Date Idea #6.

Many museums have "Free Days" or other discounts. Check with museums in your area to see what specials are going on. Price: Nada

Date Idea #7.

Everyone loves a good Scavenger Hunt. They aren't just for kids at a birthday party. Feel free to make your own list and make it as risqué or innocent as you wish. Not up for making your own list, check out these suggestions.

Date Idea #8.

Going to the movie theater can add up, but renting movies to watch at home isn't so bad. However, if you wanted to save even more money you can get many movies from your local library for free. Price: free – $5

Date Idea #9.

Dust off your old board games are start up the game console. A little friendly competition is perfect for date. Price: $0

Date Idea #10.

Have you checked out the local music scene in your area? Many local bands play at bars for little to no cover. Dance and enjoy the music and still have a little money left over for a drink or two. Price: Depends on what you decide to spend on drinks.
Dating isn't about money. It's about two people getting to know each other and making memories. If you have any ideas please share.

Nobody's wearing their diamonds to the beach anymore Darling, and you shouldn't be either. I don't know about you ladies, but I've heard one too many stories about women losing precious jewelry with precious stones on the beach. We could just be more careful with where we put our things, or we could do what I do and have a separate jewelry selection that you wear to places where things are lost easily. The following are the top 9 pieces of beach jewelry that are totally adorable for the beach and totally replaceable!

1. Forever 21 Floral Drop Earrings

Forever 21 Floral Drop Earrings
Price: $ 4.80 at forever21.com
These little beauties cost under five dollars and are still totally flirty and fun. They're pretty light weight and even though they hang down, they don't really snag on anything. They've got that summer beachy feel that you want and if you lose one, you won't be out too much cash.

2. Forever 21 Floral Bottom Etched Ring

Forever 21 Floral Bottom Etched Ring
Price: $2.80 at forever21.com
This is the perfect beach ring. It's got an adorable design and it's cheap! The best part however is that it's plastic, not metal so you won't need to take it off if you're planning on laying out. Because unlike it's metal counterparts, it's doesn't heat up too much!

3. Charlotte Russe Double Stranded Bead Necklace

Charlotte Russe Double Stranded Bead Necklace
Price: $7.99 at charlotterusse.com
It's colorful, it's delicate and it looks totally adorable with a little sun dress over a bikini. Just remember that this necklace will give you a very weird tan line if you wear it in the sun for too long. But, until you're laying out, this necklace completes any summer look!

I love to dance! When I see music videos I am looking only at the choreography. Here are some music videos that have the best choreography… enjoy!

1. Fatboy Slim – Weapon of Choice

Fatboy Slim – Weapon of Choice
youtube.com
I love this video! It is so hilarious and the dance moves are untouchable. Christopher Walken is clearly having fun. I started cleaning my house to this song and doing my own silly dance. This video is a classic!

2. Aaliyah- Are you that somebody?

One of her best dancing videos. Aaliyah made dancing look easy, didn’t she?

3. J. Lo – Love Don't Cost a thing?

J.Lo is one of my favorite artists. I love to see her dance. Her choreography is so fun and she shows that she can really move! I think it's the Latin in her! Go J.Lo!

We've all been there, that heart wrenching and soul crushing time just after a break up when your eyes are puffy and it's all you can do just to take that chocolate bar out of your mouth. But ladies, it's time to buck up a little. After years and years we've finally found the best ways to stop being so depressed and take a step in the direction of getting over it.

1. Don't try to be friends right away

Don't try and be friends right away
After being with someone for any amount of time it's hard to just shut off the romance and be their friend right away. And trying is going to make things awkward. So, give yourself some time. You each need to spend some time apart without speaking before you can try friendship. And until you are absolutely ready to make that step, DON'T make contact; it'll just be a step in the wrong direction.

2. Let it out

sosarem
As cheesy and cliché as it may sound, sometimes the best way to get over a break up is to let it all out. Talk it over with a very patient friend who doesn't mind hearing about how his eyes used to glow right before he kissed you. Or write it out in a diary or in a blog. Whatever you chose to do, don't censor yourself. Let out every feeling you have about it — it'll feel like a weight is being lifted off your shoulders.

3. Cry

Cry
That's right, cry. Even when you're the one doing the breaking up, it's ok to be sad and want to cry over the loss of your relationship, so why don't you? You may not feel very cute after but most of the time, a good cry with a good reason feels pretty darn refreshing. So force your sadness out through your eyes and let those teardrops roll.
