In (belated) honor of all the mothers out there who make the world so much more wonderful, today we're dedicating WhoWhatWear.com to some of our favorite yummy mummies. We love the way these six stylish ladies manage to balance their family lives with fashion; they give all of us inspiration for what motherhood can look like (even for those of us who are sans offspring). Whether you adore sophisticated layered looks à la Gwen Stefani or prefer modern bohemian ensembles per Nicole Richie, we've got all the must-have mom trends in this installment of
What They Wear: Stylish Moms.
Terrific Print Tunics
Voluminous tunics and mini dresses are a go-to choice for stylish ladies like Nicole Richie and Claudia Schiffer and we love the way they style this wardrobe staple. Richie opted for a colorful print version in March when she was snapped taking her wee ones to a birthday party in Los Angeles. Her long sleeved style is a one-of-a-kind piece from NUI and is made from vintage fabrics, but don't worry, similar styles are available at Ron Herman. Just ring them and ask about their selection of NUI Vintage Tunics and Dresses ($450, 323.651.4129) and you'll be well on your way to getting Richie's look. (Check out Tolani's
Nisha Tunic ($99) for an in-stock alternative.) All you need to complete the look is a pair of flat ankle booties, like Richie's exact House of Harlow
1960 Laser Cutout Ankle Boots ($225) in Black, and an embellished tote, such as her Simone Camille
The Original Bag ($985), which is similar to the
3 Tier Messenger Bag ($630) and
3 Tier Original Bag ($975). If Richie's vibrant palette is not quite your speed, you can look to another model mom for a more subdued take on the tunic: Claudia Schiffer. Schiffer was recently snapped in an oversized t-shirt dress while walking in London with her daughter Clementine. The blonde supermodel selected Richard Nicoll's
Stella Printed Silk Dress ($595) for her about-town jaunt and we heartily approve of the oversized silhouette and the striking hibiscus print. To approximate her look, try a simple gray dress like Topshop's
Smock Dress ($145) or a subtle print like Nili Lotan's
Nadette Dress ($357) and your favorite oversized sunnies.
Cool Columns
In addition to the short and swirly styles seen on bohemian moms, we also love the long lean lines seen on Victoria Beckham and Gwen Stefani. The former showed off her take on the cool column in the beginning of the year, when Beckham went to the movies with sons Romeo (above) and Cruz. The artist formerly known as Posh Spice opted for a casual ensemble comprised of Jonathan Saunders'
Jersey Printed Tank Top ($205) and a skinny pair of ankle zip jeans by Stella McCartney. Stefani, on the other hand, showed off a more layered iteration when she was photographed carrying her youngest boy, Zuma, to lunch in North Hollywood. The singer/songwriter looked oh-so fashionable in an A.L.C. striped mini dress, army green cropped parka, and flat boots. To create your own take on Beckham's slim look, we like Something Else's
Midnight Gem Tank Top ($93) and Heritage 1981's
Faded Tribal Print Tank ($15) paired with J Brand's
The Deal Skinny Leg Jeans ($161) or Ksubi's
Low-Rise Super-Skinny Ankle Zip Jeans ($160) and your favorite black peep-toe pumps. Those of you in cooler climes might prefer Stefani's layered ensemble; don't miss TFNC's
Cowl Front Stud Shoulder Stripe Dress ($54), LNA's
Long Sleeve Tee Dress ($106), or Alice by Temperley's
Striped Jersey Dress ($325) for a blue and white iteration. You can add a slip, like Victoria's Secret's
Lace Applique Satin Slip ($48), for that extra touch of Stefani style, or just add a hooded parka, like Topshop's
Petite Stud Army Jacket ($100) or Burberry's
Taffeta Bomber Jacket with Cargo Pockets ($575).
Diaphanous Dresses
Our final yummy mummy trend is perfect for spring and summer and always a cool choice: the diaphanous dress. As spotted on Jessica Alba and Isla Fisher, the dress du jour is gauzy, long, and boasts a lovely muted pattern. Of course, while a semi-sheer, simply cut dress is fabulously feminine on its own, the styling details can certainly make this go-to piece much for interesting. For example, for an afternoon in the park with her daughter Honor, Alba started with Gypsy 05's
Fara Silk Maxi Dress ($209) in Mauve as the base of her look. To enliven the simple spaghetti strap shape, she added Gap's
Denim Biker Jacket ($69.50) in Light Wash and Kenneth Cole New York's Fringe Me Sandals, which are from the brand's S/S 09 collection. (For very similar shoes, check out the current version, Kenneth Cole
New York's Urban Fringe Sandals ($175) in Stone.) The result is stylish without being too trendy and really age appropriate too. We also like Isla Fisher's take on this look; instead of adding a moto jacket, Fisher opted for an Isabel Marant Stanley Bag ($888, 212.219.2284) to give her print maxi dress a little touch of toughness. Try Charlotte Russe's
Tribal Print Challis Max Dress ($28) or Single's
Printed Silk-Chiffon Maxi Dress ($380) with ASOS's
Duffle Across Body Bag ($59) in nude suede or Rebecca Minkoff's
Linear Stud Rocker Bag ($295) to capture the spirit of Fisher's look.
