Under $100: BBQ
With summer lurking on the horizon, suddenly your Who What Wear editors are realizing that we've become a little distracted. Memorial Day is so close you could almost kiss it, so it's no wonder that our minds are preoccupied with thoughts of lazy weekends full of sunbathing, picnics, and backyard barbeques. Inevitably, all these musings lead us to the question of what we should wear to these upcoming warm-weather gatherings. While denim and gingham may be fabrics commonly associated with barbeques of yore, this season we urge you to take a more modern approach to casual, outdoor dressing and look to Louis Vuitton's S/S 10 collection for inspiration. Instead of plumbing those aforementioned classic American fabrics and prints this season, Marc Jacobs instead showed a wonderful assortment of military separates mixed with gypset touches that added up to a super-chic global nomad look. All in all, it's a perfect show to channel right now, so for today's story we tracked down a slew of spot-on pieces that will keep you on budget
and looking effortlessly stylish all summer long!
MinkPink Skirmish Tank ($51)
While the delightful mish-mash of exotic prints and tribal embellishments at Louis Vuitton might have been inspired by foreign locales, they can be easily interpreted for a soiree in your own backyard. Simply start with a softly tie-dyed tank, like this racerback version by MinkPink in blue and yellow, then add army green accent pieces and natural accessories (like a straw sun hat or a pair of feather earrings) to create your own version of the LV look.
ASOS Frankie Fringe Sandals($59)
If mixing prints and patterns isn't your style, you can still try the tribal trend—all you need is a little fringe! These flat, strappy sandals from ASOS offer an understated, but still bold, way to get this key spring look, plus we love their ultra-flattering blush color! Wear them with your favorite solid-color separates or an outrageously patterned ensemble, either way you'll look totally current and cute!
French Connection Sunrise Weave Clutch ($48)
Something about summertime always sends us on the search for the next great straw bag, and this season a smart clutch feels right. While it definitely doesn't pack as much of a punch in the storage department as an oversized beach bag, this French Connection bag makes up for it with its sleek streamlined shape and chic contrasting stripes!
Topshop Zebra Feather Drop Earrings ($30)
Immediately after seeing these feathered Topshop earrings, they jumped to the top of our must-have list! While the delicate feathers invoke a decidedly bohemian air, the zebra print and chain details keep them from veering into predictable hippie territory. We can envision them dressing up an elegant black dress, but they're equally suitable for a floral tunic and denim cutoffs.
T by Alexander Wang Classic Muscle T-Shirt ($78)
We can always count on Alex Wang to provide us with completely wearable casual pieces and this basic dark green tee really delivers! It's a great warm weather interpretation of the military influence seen all over the runways, and its classic shape is something that can be worn year round. We recommend styling it tucked into a printed mini, or worn loose over trouser shorts.
Bop Bijoux Made With Love Bracelets ($32)
Created through the Made With Love project, these recycled rubber bracelets are not only eco-friendly, they're also the fruits of a fair-trade initiative in Western Africa. Women in Mali make each set of 18 handcrafted bracelets, and part of the proceeds goes to a center for homeless children in Senegal. Aside from the ideological reasons to buy them, who wouldn't want to adorn their wrists with such beautifully crafted art?
Lucky Brand Koko Wedge Sandal ($99)
Flats are usually our shoes of choice whenever lawn-walking is involved (oh, the dreaded heel sink!), but whenever we prefer a little height, a wedge is our go-to footwear alternative. Of course, when the wedges are as cool as this eye-catching woven design by Lucky, we might forsake flats forever. We're wild about the black-and-white pattern—it's a welcome variation from typical neutral cork or raffia— plus the price is simply perfect!
Delia's Sophie Skirt ($40)
We were pleasantly surprised to find this adorable polka dotted skirt from Delia's because it provides yet another option for incorporating mixed prints into your summer wardrobe. Paired with a tribal-inspired top, it is sure to make a sizzle at your next summertime bash.
Juicy Couture Pompom Tassels Straw Sun Hat ($88)
The multicolor pompom embellishments on this straw hat remind us of the bright fur tassels adorning the accessories at the Louis Vuitton S/S 10 show. Much like the way those unexpected accents made the shoes and bags stand out on the runway, the textured pop of color dangling from this wide brimmed hat has the same effect. Indeed, we can see this hat transitioning from a day at the beach to a laid-back summer barbeque very smoothly!
Cheap Monday Halterneck Bikini ($45)
The insanely affordable price tag on this Cheap Monday bathing suit is almost as alluring as its vibrant turquoise shade! Yet, there is still more to love–specifically, the halter neck and gathering at the bust add some girlishness to the fairly minimal silhouette. We can picture it as a chic underpinning for a gauzy dress, which makes it the perfect piece to take you from the sand to an al fresco lunch.
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil ($17) in Mildew
This line of colorful eye pencils from Urban Decay is truly obsession-worthy, as it offers both a smooth application and smudge-free staying power. Right in line with the army green accents seen on the spring runways, this deep forest green hue would look lovely blended along the lash lines and paired with a soft coral lip. —Natalie Yost
