Today's Obsessions

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:09 AM PDT
Did you watch the celeb-filled charity gala last week? I've never seen so many red dresses! Everyone from Jessica Simpson to Brooke Vincent was being a Scarlet lady, and its certain to be a huge trend through Spring and Summer. There were eight styles that were huge, though, and here are my top high street alternatives…

1. Ponti-Roma Tailored Pencil Dress

Price: $64 at asos.com
Pencil dresses were huge, and this one is brilliant! It's made in the style of a very similar one worn by Victoria Beckham. From the slit top to the tight fitting shape, it is amazingly flattering and only needs red heels to finish it off… or to be a bit different, how about a thick black belt and matching shoes?

2. Asos Origami Fold Over Dress

Price: $34 at asos.com
This orange-red really makes some skin tones glow, and this style was massive. The folded top is perfect for flattering smaller busts, and the nipped in waist gives a gorgeous hourglass figure which will look divine! Buy a big animal pendant that hangs just over the top of the dress, and team with silver heels. You'll be full of confidence!

3. Ruched Sheer Panel Dress

Price: $64 at asos.com
This dress is bang on trend, with the sheer bust panel fitting in perfectly with the risqué lingerie trend and the nipped in waist and ruched panelling giving you a body to die for. The colour looks great against pale or tanned skin, and adding black accessories finishes the look. Or if you are feeling really brave, try gold… it sounds odd, but gold really makes this colour pop!

I admit, I am not going to lie to you, there is no magic diet out there. They simply do not exist and there is no magic pill you can take that will shed pounds off of your body in only a week. However, because they are rich in fiber, there are some foods that take longer to digest and have less calories per gram. They may also alter the intestinal hormone levels and lead to you not feeling as hungry. Below, I am going to give you a list of 10 foods to eat to lose weight.

10. Salads

When you make your salads, make them with tomatoes, cabbage, carrot, beetroot, cucumber, capsicum or lettuce. To lighten it up even more, use lemon as your salad dressing. Sandwiches are also a good way to get these raw vegetables. Bread can help fill you up, but be sure not to use butter spread. Instead, use coriander and mint chutney.

9. Grapes

What do you think about grapes? They sure are yummy! Munching your way through some grapes after a hard day is much better than chips! They are high in sugar, but as long as you do not overdo it, they can give you some soothing hand to mouth action and do you know something? They do not have any fat. They are good when they're cold. One hundred grams of grapes only have seventy calories.

8. Oranges

They are orange and they are yummy! The slower you eat, the easier it is to recognize that your body is full. What snack takes longer than peeling an orange?

Summer is here, and the kids are already bored. What to do, what to do! Here are some very easy, very fun activities to keep that whiny, "Mommm, I'm so bored!" out of your children's vocabulary this summer.

1. Why wait until Halloween to enjoy carving a pumpkin?

Only exchange the pumpkin for a watermelon! After you are finished carving, enjoy the fruit of your labor!

2. Hold an outdoor art show

Invite all the neighborhood kids to join. Display their artwork, pass out ribbons and awards, and hold auctions and sell the art to admiring parents. Use the cash to buy homemade ice cream ingredients and next weekend host a homemade sundae buffet!

3. Host an outdoor theatre

You can coach the children and adults to participate. Set up an outdoor stage area made with old sheets, and act away. For more fun, make programs, serve snacks, and film the event. At the end of summer, invite everyone over to watch the re-make.

If you've never used PayPal to make or accept online payments before, you don't know what you're missing! PayPal is basically an online bank, safe and secure and easy to use! Want to learn more? Here are my top seven reason to use PayPal…

1. You can send money all over the world

If you have friends and family in other countries, or if you want to make a purchase from somewhere overseas, no worries! PayPal makes it easy to send money to anyone, anywhere. They even do the currency conversions and calculations for you, and the fees are very reasonable, and are paid by the receiver, not the sender. It's cheaper, faster, and, in my view, better than traditional wire services!

2. It's safe and secure

How many other money service offer free buyer and seller protections, and make it easy to make purchases or send cash without sharing credit card or banking information? You can open and use a PayPal account without providing any banking or credit card info, so your personal information stays safe and secure. And if you choose to shop with any of the thousands of retailers that accept PayPal for payment, your information stays safe, too!

3. It's accepted on eBay

Almost every seller on eBay accepts, and actually prefers, payment via PayPal. eBay has a bunch of handy PayPal tools built-in, too, since both websites are owned by the same company. And again, since PayPal is safe and secure to use, why not? If you pay for your eBay items using PayPal, you won't have to wait for a check or money order to be processed before receiving your goodies!

We all know that fast food is terribly unhealthy for us, and yet we Americans spend more on fast food each year than we do on higher education and on health care. It's probably because fast food is so convenient! But you can still eat fast food without ruining your diet or your overall health. How? Here's my list of the ten fast foods that are actually pretty good for you, and won't wreck your diet!

1. Burger King TenderGrill Garden Salad

Instead of: Tendercrisp (fried) chicken sandwich
This yummy salad has a little bit of everything — crisp lettuce, tasty carrots, ripe tomatoes, three kinds of cheese, and a little grilled chicken. Choose from one of two light dressings (Ken's fat-free ranch or light Italian) and you won't ruin your diet! This is much better for you than the fried chicken sandwich… compare 270 calories, 9 grams of fat in the salad to a whopping 800 calories, 46 grams of fat In the sandwich! Wow!

2. McDonald's Honey Mustard Grilled Snack Wrap

Instead of: Premium Crispy Chicken Club Sandwich
I love these little grilled snack wraps, and you can even order them without the dressing, if you're really trying to cut out calories and fat! This is just as tasty as one of the sandwiches, with less than half the fat and calories. This is one delicious item you can order from McDonald's that won't ruin your diet!

3. McDonald's Hamburger

Instead of: Angus Mushroom & Swiss
Sometimes, a light little chicken sandwich of salad won't do. You're craving beef! But rather than opting for a huge fattening double burger with cheese, use some restraint and have a hamburger (no cheese!) instead. One hamburger has a relatively low 250 calories and 9 grams of fat, but the Angus Mushroom and Swiss has three times more — 790 calories, and 39 grams of fat! Yikes! The hamburger is obviously a much better, healthier, choice!

1. Cauliflower Pizza

Just look at the photos and tell me if you can’t imagine just how good it smells. Oh yeah, the crust is made of cauliflower. Interesting, right?

2. Rosemary Potato and Chicken Pizza

Pizza with chicken is something I seldom have but when I do, I just fall madly in love. This particular pizza just looks sooooo delectable.

3. Muffin Pizza

Another healthy alternative calling for gluten-free baking mix. Cute may not be a word you’d use to describe pizza but it is applicable here.

4. Eggplant Pizza

I would so make this if only the boyfriend is not allergic to eggplant. Well, I still should and not give him any. Even if the aroma tortures him so.

5. Pepperoni Pizza

This one looks easy and yum, too. Oh who am I kidding, there is no pizza I would not eat.

When you're a little girl, it's easy to make new friends. Potential BFFs are everywhere, at school, at swim lessons, soccer practice, even standing behind you and your mother in line at the shops. But now that we're grown-ups, it's a lot harder to make new friends, and to spot a new BFF. Here are my tips on spotting a new BFF…

1. She listens

If you're constantly having to interrupt to get a word in edgewise, then this girl may not be BFF material. A friend, new or familiar, will want to listen to what you have to say, so they can get a feel for your opinions, style, and more.

2. She asks questions

One sign that this new friend might be BFF material is how well she listens. If she asks questions and pays attention to your answers, rather than making every conversation you have about her somehow, she'll likely be a good, attentive friend… just what we're all looking for! After all, one day, this girl may be wearing orange taffeta to stand up as a bridesmaid for you!

3. She's there for you

Any friend, new or old, will make an effort to be available with cheesecake and Kleenex after a bad break-up or champagne and party favors to celebrate an accomplishment. Hopefully, you'll have more things to celebrate rather than things that require the cheesecake cure…

Honeymoons in the United States are often forgotten about because of places like Paris, Rome, or Athens and though we may not have the Eiffel tower, the Roman Colosseum, or Acropolis we do have wonders of the world, tropical beaches, romantic getaways and much more. Here are five of those locations in the US that might be the perfect honeymoon for you and your sweetheart.

5. Viva Las Vegas…

lasvegas
What’s not to love about Las Vegas? There is entertainment like hotel Rio’s free Show in the Sky, which I have personally seen and love. There are celebrities like Bette Midler and comedian Chelsea Handler who always keeps me laughing when I watch her E! show, “Chelsea Lately”, and who can forget the casinos along the strip like Treasure Island, MGM Grand, and The Venetian which has a Venice inspired gondola ride. Take a short drive west of Las Vegas to enjoy the desert side of Nevada and visit Red Rock Canyon where you can climb and explore the beautiful mountain like rocks. Visit the Hoover Dam where you can be in Arizona and Nevada at the same time and go boating on Lake Mead while you’re in the area. Before you two make your trip home take an amazing helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon and take pictures that will make everyone wish they had planned a honeymoon in Vegas! Please share your Vegas hot spots with us.

4. Florida Keys Please…

florida-keys
Beautiful beaches, clear blue water, tropical fish and wildlife, and a historical culture full of victorian architecture are only a few things that the Florida Keys brings to the rest of the states. In Key Largo you can scuba dive down to the Spiegel Grove Wreck, a ship that was sunk after retiring from the Navy to help create a new coral reef ecosystem. Visit history in Key West at the Key West Heritage House Museum and Robert Frost Cottage and put your toes on the Southernmost Point in the US. Other islands of the Keys include Big Pine and the Lower Keys, Marathon, and Islamorada which are all just as fabulous for your honeymoon as Key Largo and Key West. Have you been to the Keys, which one is your favorite island?

3. Ski together in Aspen….

aspen1
Aspen, Colorado is beautiful all year round, but if your honeymoon falls during the winter months and you just happen to be an adventure type couple then these mountains are the place for you! Stay in the center of Aspen at Sky Hotel where you can take a dip in the heated pool as the snow lays on the ground around you. What better time to snuggle close together in front of a romantic fire than after a day on the slopes at the Snowmass Village. The ski and snowboarding season at Snowmass and Aspen Mountains runs from November to April and at Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk, which as been the home of the ESPN winter X Games, it’s open from December to April. I’ve never been skiing myself but from the breath taking pictures I have seen on Colorado.com, Aspen would be a lovely place to learn how to ski! Could this be the honeymoon spot for you and your fiance?

2. Wonders of the World…

falls
Waking up to this view on your honeymoon while laying next to your new life long partner will have you pinching yourself to make sure your not dreaming! Niagara Falls, NY has hotels that overlook the falls and hotels like Barton Hill Hotel and Spa whose doors open to the beautiful Falls river. If you and your fiance love the water and are ready for some excitement then take a trip down the river in the Whirlpool Jet Boat, but make sure you go before eating lunch! And speaking of lunch, make sure to stop at the Top of the Falls Restaurant to get a great view of one of the wonders of the world and walk out on the observation tower at the Niagara Falls State Park if you really want to get up close and personal with the Falls. Visiting astounding landscapes on our honeymoons reminds us how phenomenal this world is and how lucky we are to be sharing this moment with someone we love. Tell us about your trip to Niagara.
*7 Most Romantic Destinations for Your Honeymoon…

1. The Six Islands of Hawaii…

hawaii
The six islands of Hawaii have many things to offer any couple and on one special night you may find yourself enjoying a luau like the one pictured from the island of Maui at the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort. Or find yourselves 10,000 feet above sea level on Maui’s highest peak at Haleakala National Park enjoying the sunrise above the clouds. Set sail on the Makani Catamaran on the island of Oahu and watch the fireworks when you go on Friday night, I love watching fireworks with my fiance and could only imagine how romantic it would be to watch them while overlooking the waters of Oahu, Hawaii. Explore the trails of Kauai on horseback and dip into a beautiful mountain pool and waterfalls at the end of the adventure. Don’t forget about the beaches of Hawaii like the Kaupoa Beach on the island of Molokai where you and your fiance can sink your toes into the white sand. See the wonder of Shipwreck Beach on the island of Lanai where an oil-tanker from the 1940s is still stuck among other unknown elements and don’t forget to take your camera! One reason to visit Hawaii’s big island is the Volcanoes National Park where you may be able to see the Kilauea volcano erupt. Hawaii’s six islands are a world of their own and if you don’t get here on your honeymoon you should definitely vacation here at some point in your life. Which island will you explore?
