Colorful accessories break up a neutral palette.
Adding bright accents to your outfit is a quick and easy way to cheer up neutral tones as Sofie, 22, from Arizona, shows us. When selecting a black-on-black look, take a page from her playbook, which means layering on chromatic bracelets and accessorizing with a colorful bag. Stack your wrist with Alexia Crawford's
Bandle Beaded Bangles ($18), which have an adorable rainbow palette that's sure to make any outfit pop. Additionally, small details on your bag, like the feathers on Anthropologie's
Carnaval Bag ($338) or the beaded fringe on Lucky Brand's
Western Brown Lace Fringe Bag ($98), can add a great splash of color as well.
Ruffles and clogs are a perfect warm-weather combo.
We love the sweetness of a delicate, ruffled dress on a spring afternoon, but don't think you have to wear such a frock with simple flats or heels. Instead of going the typical shoe route, look to
Iris, 26, from the Netherlands, for some sartorial inspiration. She accessorized with a pair of clogs, which takes her warm-weather ensembles to new heights. These wooden-heel shoes look superb with a floral print summer dress—like Topshop's
Grid Floral Oversized Tunic ($90)—or cut-off jean shorts, but for spring's colder moments we suggest pairing them with black opaque tights. To re-create Iris' interpretation, we suggest Patterson J. Kincaid's
Maggie Cotton and Silk Dress ($138) combined with Steve Madden's
Cecelia Black Leather Clogs ($100) or Jeffrey Campbell's
Charlie-C Clogs ($125). For those more low-key day looks, try a nude style, or compliment your evening attire with a black pair.
Bohemian touches are right on-trend for spring.
The much-loved hippie trend is still alive and well, but instead of wearing a head-to-toe Hendrix-inspired outfit, Daniella, 23, from London, shows us a more modern mix. She added a select few bohemian pieces to her wardrobe staples, resulting in a polished look overall. To emulate her outfit, start by dressing up your hair with a patterned scarf; if you're a muted-print sort of person, try NW3 by Hobbs'
New Georgia Tea Party Head Scarf ($93), or you can spice it up with Forever 21's
Peacock Print Headwrap ($4), which will add vibrant color to a demure look. Another great accessory to take note of is the drawstring bag; its relaxed silhouette meshes perfectly with the bohemian vibe. Two must-try options are Anthropologie's
Gilded Gourd Bag ($298) and Matt & Nat's
Commix Drawstring Bag ($230). Daniella also opted for a pair of pants in lieu of a traditional bohemian maxi dress, so pick up a pair of tapered pants, like Silence and Noise's
Paperbag Trousers ($58), to round out the entire ensemble.
A patterned scarf gives new life to summer florals.
The old adage that April showers bring May flowers is not just a popular weather prediction, it's also true to current trends! As such, it's no surprise to see beautiful florals popping up from the ground and onto our favorite spring dresses, skirts, and accessories. We like these nature-inspired patterns best when they're worn in a contemporary way; just look to Tieka, 23, from Michigan, and her combo of a posy-print dress with a patterned scarf for reference. To achieve a similar look, you can either go for a fitted silhouette with a vibrant print, like Shoshanna's
Floral-Print Sheath Dress ($360), or pick up a light and flowy style, such as Pins and Needles'
Puff Sleeve Chiffon Dress ($68). When searching for the perfect scarf, experiment with various prints and colors to achieve an impressive contrast. We suggest opting for a lightweight summer scarf like Martin + Osa's
Batik Silk Scarf ($70), Ann Taylor's
Watercolor Ikat Scarf ($35), or ASOS's
Batik Long Dip Dye Scarf ($26)—all perfect for the warmer months.
Stripes and denim make for a directional ensemble.
While both stripes and denim are wardrobe necessities, when styled in the right way, these staples can look fresh again, as
Mieke, 17, from Berlin, shows us. Her nautical body-con mini looks cool worn high on the waist with a tucked-in graphic tee; just be sure to add a denim button-down like Urban Renewal's
Boyfriend Chambray Shirt ($48) for a flawless compliment. We particularly love how Mieke played with proportions by adding the oversized workshirt, but feel free to experiment with a shorter option—like Gap's
Denim Western Shirt ($55)—for a different approach. Looking to recreate the base of her look? Check out BDG's
Stripe Contrast Pull On Skirt ($48) and Victoria Secret Pink's
High-Waisted Skirt ($20), as both are smart alternatives that won't break the bank.
A daytime dress looks chic beneath an oversized army jacket.
We can't seem to get enough of military-inspired jackets here in the WhoWhatWear.com office, which is why we were excited to see this lovely interpretation brought to our attention by Jessica, 27, from Brooklyn. The military coat is great for beating cold weather days, but over a simple, toned-down day dress—like C&C California's
Wrap Tunic Dress ($98) or Alice Ritter's
Lovely Dress ($240)—it becomes the perfect transitional piece for your wardrobe. Jessica selected a jacket with an oversized fit, which harmonized with the draped shape of her dress perfectly; try Rag & Bone's
Ohara Cargo Jacket ($520) for a similarly relaxed outerwear option. —Jessica Baker
