We've looked to a number of heartwarming, coming-of-age '80s teen flicks for inspiration over the years, but there's only one cult classic that really embodies the spirit of fashion this season:
Lucas. Sure, it might not be as instantly identifiable as our go-to girl-centric movies like
Sixteen Candles, but this sweet movie and its all-American look are so in sync with the current runway trends. From the athletic-oriented influences seen at Alexander Wang's spring show to some geek-chic styling choices at DSquared, the spring collections were loaded with pieces that perfectly update the
Lucas look.
If you need a little plot refresher to get you in the
Currently Channeling spirit, we're happy to oblige. (
Lucas fanatics, please feel free to skip ahead.) The movie features Corey Haim as the nerdy, 14-year-old, titular character and Charlie Sheen as Cappie, the popular football team captain. One summer, a pretty girl moves to town—Maggie, played by the
Goonies Kerri Green—and strikes up a friendship with the socially awkward Lucas. When they start school that fall, life gets difficult for Lucas as the football team begins to pick on him for being skinny, small, and dorky. Cappie comes to his rescue and protects Lucas from the bullying, but their budding friendship launches another new problem; Maggie falls for Cappie, which breaks Lucas' heart. In a misguided attempt to win Maggie's heart, Lucas joins the football team and unfortunately gets severely injured in a game. While recovering in the hospital, Lucas finally acknowledges that his love for Maggie is unrequited and that the two will just be friends. Fortunately the flick ends on a happy note; upon Lucas' return to school, he discovers that the entire football team and all his classmates have finally accepted him—a very happy fact indeed.
As for the sartorial story, it's worth noting that all of these events transpire with the cast kitted out in preppy classics. The wardrobe involves lots of quintessential high-school pieces and varsity-influenced outfits mixed with those stereotypical '80s nerd references (like oversized glasses and odd hats). We plumbed these outfits for inspiration and found a slew of spring pieces that perfectly embody the American style typified in
Lucas. Go ahead and check them out now, after all, they were gathered for your shopping pleasure!
Alexander Wang Brady Football Clutch ($130)
When it comes to sporty fashions this season, nobody does it better than Alexander Wang. His S/S 2010 runway show offered an obsession-worthy display of all-American football themes, which happens to be the game of choice for today's story. We love an interesting purse to complement our ensembles, and the slouchy shape and distressed leather of Wang's clutch definitely fits the bill.
Kenneth Jay Lane Scarab Beetle Ring ($115)
Studying various insects—especially the swarm patterns of locusts—is one of Lucas' greatest afternoon escapes. When we spotted this Kenneth Jay Lane ring, we knew it would be a fun, Lucas-approved accent to your summer ensembles. The Swarovski crystals and rich amber color of the resin bead takes this beetle from creepy crawler to chic accessory.
Adidas Honey Hi Shoes ($55)
Adidas decided to kick it old school with their laid-back, '80s inspired lace-ups. These attention grabbers don the high school's red and white school colors, and we can easily picture Cappie, along with the rest of the football team, sporting this exact pair on game day. Make them your own by pairing them with a flirty summer sundress or your favorite cutoff shorts.
American Eagle Active Harem Shorts ($20)
Keeping in line with fashionable athletic wear, American Eagle created these harem-style shorts that look like a better version of traditional gym class attire. Unlike the dreaded days of P.E. uniforms, these shorts will give you a cool and comfortable look. Plus, the affordable price tag makes this an irresistible addition to your closet!
BDG Varsity Jacket ($88)
The quintessential jock can be spotted across campus demonstrating school pride in their polyester letterman jackets. And while the varsity jacket no longer carries the stigma it used to, this vintage-inspired BDG version is our homage to the film's handsome varsity football captain Cappie. It's a nifty, subtle alternative to last year's band jacket and will definitely work with all your favorite pieces for fall too.
Nasty Gal Foxy Mama Glasses ($30) in Tortoise
We are excited to see that geek chic is still very much alive and well when it comes to eyewear. What was once the subject of ridicule and teasing—Lucas looked absolutely adorable in his thick, oversized frames—is now a hot fashion accessory. Nasty Gal's perfect red pair is a great way to add quirkiness to your favorite outfit.
Surface to Air Women No.2 Boyfriend Jeans ($166)
If you are on the hunt for a great pair of white jeans this summer, look no further than Surface to Air. The comfortable fit and distressed wash of their No. 2 boyfriend style is perfect for all your Lucas-inspired explorations. Dress them up with high-rise heels or make it a casual day with flats.
Topshop Nibbled Tee ($32)
Lucas was never one to have a pristine wardrobe, as his clothing often looked worn out and unwashed. We don't support looking dirty, but we think this Topshop tee exemplifies Lucas' look with a stylish twist. Its tea-stained color and nibbled hole details give it a destroyed, vintage feel, not to mention, the cropped hemline would look great over a pair of high-waisted jeans!
Betmar Knotted Cloche Hat ($24) in Camel
If you are going to be lying by the pool or attending an afternoon BBQ, you might want to shade yourself from the sun's harsh rays. We have made note of Lucas' bucket hat, and think Betmar's Knotted Cloche is a chic and practical alternative. The tie on the back is a charming accent used to create a custom fit, while the grommets on the side provide much-needed ventilation for those hot, summer days.
La Mer Oversized Vintage Watch ($85)
Watches have made their way from classic timepiece to a decorative wrist accessory we can't leave home without. La Mer's oversized version—part of designer Martine Ilana's new collection Carpe Diem—looks almost identical to the ones that both Maggie and Lucas wear throughout the film. We trust you will always be on time with this stylish ticker.
Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony Shoes ($175)
We are pretty much obsessed with anything that has Chloe Sevigny's name attached to it, and these boots she designed for Opening Ceremony are no exception. In the film, Lucas wears a pair of ankle-length Converse, but this traditional chukka style lace-up is a little more appropriate for all your fashionable moments. —Jessica Baker
