Tales of being plucked from everyday life and turned into a silver-screen star are stuff of Hollywood lore: Lana Turner was legendarily discovered at the counter of Schwab's Pharmacy on Sunset Boulevard, while a chance encounter with a Revlon scout at a Long Island pizza parlor changed Natalie Portman's path forever. For rising talent Jennifer Lawrence, the fateful moment was equally accidental: while on vacation in New York City with her family, she stopped to watch some street dancers, and caught the eye of a casting agent. One thing led to another, and now the 19-year-old Kentucky native not only has an impressive roster of films under her belt, she's also receiving rave reviews for her work in the Sundance favorite,
Winter's Bone. With that critically-acclaimed project set to debut in theaters next month, Lawrence is getting serious about making a splash with her personal style, so we thought it would be the perfect time to showcase this truly talented young actress. Accordingly, we're delighted to spotlight this stunning up-and-comer wearing some of the season's loveliest looks in today's
Celebrity Fashion Editorial: Splendor in the Grass.
While Lawrence's introduction to the acting world might have been fortuitous, she has proven herself worthy of buzz thanks to her incredibly powerful on-screen performances. She got her sea legs on the TBS family sitcom
The Bill Engvall Show, but it's her dark and brooding work that is really getting the attention of Hollywood. After the critical success of 2008's
The Burning Plains (directed by Guillermo Arriaga of
21 Grams and
Babel fame), Lawrence is really poised to make waves as Ree Dolly in the aforementioned
Winter's Bone. The Debra Granik-directed film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, stars Lawrence as a tough-as-nails daughter of a drug-addicted mother, who must track down her missing father in order to protect their family's home and her younger siblings. Set in the impoverished, remote Ozark Mountains, the movie is certainly not light fare, but Lawrence makes the most of her meaty role and delivers a deft and moving performance. Later this year, she will also star in
The Beaver, which is directed by (and features) Jodie Foster and is sure to be another must-see. But while Lawrence certainly embraces all of these intense and offbeat roles, she's also looking forward to new challenges. "I'd love to do something very girly and feminine," she says. "That's a little bit more out of my comfort zone."
While Hollywood has yet to cast her as a girly girl, we were happy to oblige with some of spring's prettiest pieces and most feminine trends. At our shoot in the Malibu canyons, Lawrence fell in love with the sundresses, chunky accessories, and mixed-print combos (such as Talbots'
Floral Shirt ($79.50) with the
Floral Print Shorts ($65) from Topshop). In terms of her work-event preferences, Lawrence plans on wearing a few looks from The Row for upcoming premieres and said she adores Kate Beckinsale's "polished and edgy" red-carpet outfits. She also takes wardrobe inspiration from a muse who also happens to be a WhoWhatWear.com reader favorite: Chloe Seivgny. "She's the fashion-icon queen of all actresses," she says with a laugh. Soon Lawrence might find herself in that same style category; she recently started working with the power stylist Estee Stanley, whose impeccable taste is sought after by clientele like Ashley Olsen, Jessica Biel, and Penelope Cruz. With so many spinning plates and exciting projects on the horizon one thing becomes incredible clear: Jennifer Lawrence is more than just an actress with serious star power, but a super-stylish girl on the verge, as well! —Kate Mulling
