While the fashion world offers a myriad of daring dressers to draw inspiration from, there is one young lady who is consistently mentioned as an unrivaled paragon of taste: Ashley Olsen. In addition to being one half of the trendsetting force behind two seriously covetable fashion lines—Elizabeth and James and The Row—Olsen has also mastered the art of effortless, breathtaking style. Her singular aesthetic is simultaneously evocative and cutting-edge, filled with veritable vintage finds as well as the latest must-have shoe or handbag, and is unfailingly, thrillingly chic. In short, Olsen's fashion sensibility is the perfect subject for emulation, hence today's
What Would She Wear story. In our search for the perfect product, we kept in mind this actress/designer/muse's love for well-made basics, teetering heels, and her predilection for setting the season's sunglasses trends. We're delighted to present you with the well-sourced results; hopefully we captured Olsen's sartorial savvy!
1. Benjamin Guise Marlo Sunglasses in Black ($180, 310.260.0160)
While we remain huge fans of the Row's recent eyewear collaboration with Linda Farrow, one of our favorite sunglasses designers—Benjamin Montoya—recently launched a diffusion line of his famous sunnies. Just like his signature line, these vanguard shades are handmade, but with an emphasis on a lower price point, making them a seriously smart purchase on multiple counts! This particular pair, the Marlo, is inspired by musician Nicole Simone (who also happens to be the designer's friend), and is noteworthy for its dramatic 1940s vibe. We think the frames directly speak to Olsen's ability to make what's old new again. Additionally, we love how this pair combines two of-the-moment styles: the circular frame, which Olsen helped usher into the spotlight, and the slight
cat-eye shape, which is easily emerging as this spring's biggest eyewear trend.
2. The Row Morgan Jacket ($1100) in Nude
Although she is known for pushing the sartorial envelope, Olsen still keeps a number of classic elements in her looks. She often opts for a hint of polish with at least one structured piece, like this jacket. One of the many covetable items in the Row's S/S 2010 line, a collection inspired by Slim Aaron's photographs of the Italian Riviera, this blazer nails the vibrant-yet-casually-chic vibe encapsulated in those iconic images. Plus, the linen material is a great option for warmer weather and the tan pinstripe is fresh take on a staple pattern. We can easily see our muse wearing it with jeans or over a floral maxi dress for an ideal summer ensemble with an apropos dose of bohemian chic.
3. Rogan Svelte Jean in Airo ($197)
Lately, our denim hunt has been fueled by a desire to find a modern fit with the perfect old-school vintage Levi's light-wash, and we think our nineties appetite is finally sated by this Rogan pair. The pale, dirty blue is the exact hue we've been searching for while the ankle length is perfect for showing off an of-the-moment clog or leopard ankle bootie. We could see Olsen pairing these soft skinnies with skyscraper-high spring heels or opting for a moccasin or basket-weave flat on a more off-duty day.
4. Benefit Speed Brow Quick-Set Brow Gel ($16)
Ever since the discovery of Benetint, we've been longtime admirers of the Benefit's fantastic beauty products. This quick-set brow gel—ideal for any coloring—continues to foster our crush by adding a bit of polish to a daytime look. Additionally, it pays homage to Olsen's own strong, yet simple arch, making it a naturally lovely fit.
5. Elizabeth and James Lazlo Flat in Rose Leather ($239)
The perfect warm-weather alternative to our favorite Elizabeth and James fall moccasin, this open-toe flat is our new go-to shoe for a more laid-back ensemble. The laser-cut leather is a luxurious detail, upgrading them from a standard slip-on, while the rose color is a rich, earthy hue that fits in flawlessly with spring's on-trend neutral tones. We'd pair these with an ankle-length skinny jean or a floral skirt and studded denim vest for a casually stylish weekend ensemble.
6. Marni Earrings ($310)
We already fell in love with Marni's gypsy-inspired S/S 10 accessories when they were floating around our market room for a recent photo shoot, so we were thrilled when we discovered that these statement clip-ons would be a perfect addition to Olsen's wardrobe! Equal parts costume and couture, these posh bijoux provide just the right high-low twist for today's stylesetter. The horn material adheres to spring's tribal trend and gives a bit of texture to any ensemble, while the rhinestone detailing allows these to work for evening as a great, unexpected alternative to a chandelier earring.
7. JADEtribe Nina Messenger Bag ($182)
Part of what makes Olsen's style so unique is her global bohemian sensibility, so when we came across this woven canvas messenger bag, we immediately knew it would be perfect for our subject! The ethnic print is subtle, yet it will add interest to any neutral toned outfit, while the leather side tassels add a lovely touch of where-I've-been-whimsy. Additionally, this oversized carryall is eco-friendly, making it a chic and responsible choice!
8. MAC Suntints Liquid Lip Balm SPF 20 ($14.50)
This super new tinted lip balm is our go-to for our everyday spring beauty look. The light pink gloss is subtle yet provides a lustrous finish, while the addition of SPF is an absolute necessity we can't live without. Pop this sleek tube in your oversized bag, for a marvelously modern, understated lip at the ready just like Olsen's own.
9. Equipment Shark Silk Top ($320)
The western-style shirt is quickly emerging as the boyfriend button-down's biggest competition, so we only think it's fitting that our cutting-edge muse would opt for this silhouette. We particularly like how this double-breasted pocket shirt reflects Olsen's penchant for using at least one androgynous piece to complete her look. We could readily see her pairing the sumptuous silk top with a more denim-driven ensemble for a posh contrast that echoes of many of her impeccably styled outfits.—Liza Kaplan
