What They Wear: Backstage

.
With fashion-forward femmes like Kate Moss, Erin Wasson, and Agyness Deyn influencing the way that women dress with their insouciant brand of chic (lots of vintage treasures and edgy accessories), we are always tuned in to the ways in which professional models are dressing. These industry insiders are constantly working with the best editors, stylists, and designers, so it makes sense that they look great between shows and shoots too! For today's story, we thought we would focus on ground zero of model-off-duty style in our semi-annual roundup What They Wear: Backstage! Of course, these super stylish and slim specimens often opt for second-skin styles and somber shades, but we also noticed a preponderance of new looks on many of the MVP mannequins. Whether it was pattern play, mixed materials, or an overload of ankle boots, we are pleased to share our fashionable findings. Of course we've trawled through literally hundreds of images to bring you the best of the best so make sure you check out today's subjects and to see what these lithe and lovely ladies are wearing (and perhaps get a peek at what trends will be big for fall!)

Mixed Materials
Little leather jackets may have ruled for the past few seasons, but behind the scenes at the F/W 10 shows textured outerwear was front and center. Hanne Gaby Odiele, seen backstage at Rag & Bone, wore one of the most coveted items that will be huge this fall: the shearling coat. Hers is from Balenciaga's F/W 2006 collection, but loads of designers were showing their own iterations of the trend, including Burberry, Helmut Lang, and Rag & Bone (above, far right). Of course, full-on furry styles were also spotted backstage at Caroline Herrera (bottom, middle) in exaggerated proportions, proving that when it comes to jackets, oversized is the new shrunken!

Pattern Play
It's always a safe bet to assume that our favorite lanky ladies are wearing their fair share of stark shades, but we also noticed a preponderance of patterns, prints, and graphic tees on our stylish subjects—not to mention eye-popping color to boot! Backstage at Proenza Schouler, two beauties opted for a lavender jacket and a Rolling Stones pop-art tee, respectively. If you are a fan of their styles opt for Victoria Secret's Boyfriend Blazer ($98) and Rolling Stone's Collage T-Shirt ($33), just make sure to pair your picks with slim fitting trousers and heavy-duty boots. Spotted backstage at Anna Sui, Abbey Lee Kershaw, our former MOD, rocked a masterful mix. Her garden-inspired pants, tangerine pullover, and bright scarf look sweet together, but you can just add one element of this ensemble into your wardrobe with Topshop's Floral Leggings ($40) or Martin + Osa's Mixed Print Scarf ($43) to get an equally eye-catching add-on. Just look at Snejana Onokpa, who wore a blue polka dotted wrap like Oasis' Spot Scarf ($31) backstage at Alexander Wang's show, to see how the pros do it! Of course, if you want to keep to a more muted palette, as the lovely lady backstage at Peter Som did (bottom, right), just add a graphic tee and printed purse to your pale ensemble, as neutrals are smart for spring!

Ankle Boot Overload
On footwear side note, we are still seeing tons of ankle boots—with and without heels—dominating backstage. Whether they are bright blue (at Anna Sui), black and laced (seen at Gianfranco Ferre, Peter Som, Rag & Bone) or pale and neutral (at Derek Lam and Carolina Herrera), it's all about ankle-grazing options. Whether you pair them with skinny bottoms, or tights (after all, the shows are during the dead of New York winter in February), be sure to check out our stellar selection. If black ankle booties are your cup of tea, try Steve Madden's Virgoo Boots ($76) or Dolce Vita's Wish Boots ($110). For a few neutral styles, check out Boutique 9's Elation Combat Boots ($198) or Jeffrey Campbell's French Field Boots ($138). All of these are chic and MOD-approved, so make sure you snap them up and wear them with your favorite floral skirt or cutoffs all spring and summer long for a smart transitional investment!—Kate Mulling
