Posted: 22 Apr 2010 05:17 AM PDT From our friends at thefind.com: Every year the demand for eco-friendly, sustainable, fair-trade and socially conscious fashions grow. This year TheFind's editors have rounded up their favorite style-worthy picks in honor of Earth Day. Forget the hemp tunics and cork-soled clunky sandals. Today there is something for everyone who wants to glam it up while embracing the best eco-friendly and socially responsible fashion brands. Green is the New Black For one day only on April 22, 2010 Louis Vuitton will donate 10% of all sales on its U.S. Web site to Global Green USA. Your donation will help to support the Green Schools cause for children in New Orleans and Los Angeles. To raise awareness to this cause check out Louis Vuitton's twitter stream to hear what fashion editors André Leon Talley, Nina Garcia and Kim Hastreiter have to say about saving the environment. Featured above is Sofia Coppola's exclusive design for Slim Suede Clutch (middle right, $1,400 at LouisVuitton) Eco-Luxe Leather For those who are lulled by leather but want to avoid the harsh chemicals used to treat them, Donna Karan has created a gorgeous shoulder bag called "The Bandito" organic leather bag (bottom left, $1,295 at Net-a-Porter). This bag is a luxurious design with ruched panel detailing, a drawstring tie close. The leather comes from a chemical-free farm, which treats the leather using natural vegetable oils. Earth Friendly Cardigan From Bassike is slouchy black and white striped organic cotton cardigan (upper left, $190 at Net-a-Porter) that is sure to be a well loved essential part of any eco-maven's wardrobe. The draped front adds an interesting silhouette and buttons in the front, you'll also love the stitched detail at the back and the fact that it's machine washable! The State of Organic Denim Loomstate is known for their organic cotton jeans. We love the look of the Revelation Jean (upper right, $54 at Greenloop) for its low-rise slim leg styling. These jeans are made of 99% organic cotton. The other 1% is made of elastane, which helps to give a snug fit. Loomstate is a sustainable company, which uses socially conscious and environmentally responsible manufacturing practices, and organic materials when possible. Happy Earth Day! |
Posted: 22 Apr 2010 05:00 AM PDT If you’ve got Earth Day on the brain, here’s a fashionable eco-friendly read not to miss (post first published 3/10/2009) I had the pleasure of meeting Summer Rayne Oakes at the press preview of the new Zoe&Zac line of green shoes for Payless, which she consulted on (I can’t wait!!), and was immediately impressed with her dedication and thoroughness to all things eco. I recently went to the book launch party for Ms. Oakes’ new tome “Style, Naturally: the Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty,” and was thrilled to find a book written by a hip, fashionable person on eco-frendly brands, complete with beautiful photos and a clean layout. So much information and so many “green brands” are so staid and really outdated in their styling that it’s nice to have an example of brands that are working toward reducing their impact on the environment while being on-trend, such as Form & Fauna, Terra Plana, and Kiss My Face. In addition to giving pointers and tips on what to look for in products, I thought the most helpful aspect of the text is the resources section in the back, which succinctly ties together websites to shop, definitions, and other suggested books and magazines. For more on the book and Summer Rayne Oakes, check out her site or click here to buy it! Subscribe to Fashion Pulse Daily's Feed |
Posted: 22 Apr 2010 02:16 AM PDT Nowadays we live in a world of simplified DYI; you can self-publish a book, create your own videos, and even customize your footwear or clothing. We all have the potential to become experts on these things, but I still appreciate when all the options are laid before me, and I can make easy decisions to get the exact product that represents me to a T. Speaking of Ts, custom t-shirts is a trend that has been emerging in recent years, with a bevy of sites from Cafe Press to Threadless, and now the latest, in the custom t-shirt biz, Fibers.com. The guys at the site were kind enough to give me a complimentary test run of the tee, and let’s just say that they make it as easy as ordering business cards. You can either upload your own text and images or use one of their templates, which are broken into categories such as ’I Love Shirts’ ‘Popular Culture’ and ‘Politics’. Although I’ve been designing t-shirts for over five years, I wanted to try out the site as if I didn’t have a lick of design know-how. I found the process to be relatively straightforward, with plenty of font and placement choices for the text, as well as color options. In the future, I’m hoping that they add in more women’s blank tees and organic options. Do you like my tee? You can make the exact same one if you want to show your Fashion Pulse Daily love! -Julia DiNardo |
Posted: 22 Apr 2010 01:25 AM PDT Situated in Harlem, Rocky Coulbourne’s designs echo the street-style aesthetic, reminiscent of American Apparel. He established Coulbourne+ in 2007 and draws his inspiration from the multifaceted sense of diversity in New York that acknowledges the array of ethnicities, religions, lifestyles, and fashion. The simple aesthetic of his spring collection is a reaction to the hordes of messages thrown at us by modern media and conveys one image at a time, letting the “+” imply the rest. Rocky’s design aesthetic. His Spring 2010 Preview, held in a make-shift artist loft, was dec0rated with caution tape and a mobile clothing rack. The line features graphic t-shirts, distressed denim, cozy cardigans and swimwear was admired by the press. Shop his collection here and follow the brand as it evolves. -Maria Eilersen |
